This is My Story

I’m the baker’s dozen. The youngest of 13 children. Yes, 13! My father once said he wanted a football team but he got a cheerleading squad instead (9 girls and 4 boys). In general, I would say my name describes me overall. Tonnia (pronounced Tonia) is a simple name but the spelling of it isn’t so common. So “simple but unique” is a phrase I have used over the years to describe myself. This phrase often describes my approach to life and work. How can I execute a task or job in a simple but unique way? How can I explain something to someone in a simple but unique way for them to understand? Oh, did I mention that I have a twin brother… but we have different birthdays; which is also unique.

My Foundation

I grew up in a small rural town called Hurtsboro, AL; which was like a little Mayberry, everyone in the community knew each other or the family you belonged to. Growing up in a small rural town has its advantage and disadvantage, but I wouldn’t change it because the person I am today is largely due to the things I can’t put a price tag on: the values instilled in me by my family, as well as the sense of community and the wisdom of the people I grew up around.

Growing up my parents expressed two components essential to building a strong foundation for our lives; education and having a personal relationship with God. I am thankful for their wisdom. Now, I feel it is my responsibility to give back to others what was given to me through my family and my community. It is now my opportunity to encourage, support, and share the wisdom and knowledge that can be helpful in one’s professional and personal development.

My Philosophy

I’m an ACE…always contributing expertise. This is my mantra. I have redefined how I see success for myself. To me, success is not about my occupation, but it is about positioning myself to where my skills and talents are constantly needed and in demand so that I am always contributing expertise.

My Skills

I am a Tuskegee University Golden Tiger graduate. I earned my B.S in Mechanical Engineering. In 2003, I was privileged to be a part of the first class to receive a Ph.D. in Material Science Engineering (the first Ph.D. engineering program at Tuskegee University).

My professional career consists of roles within the areas of Operations, Controls Engineering, R&D, New Product Development, and Supply Chain Management. My exposure to these areas allowed me to develop a diverse skillset and expertise. I have a passion for program development because it challenges my thinking and creativity. I enjoy developing solutions for people, processes, and systems because it allows me to bring new things to life.
